The Mildura Bowls Club ran its annual May Carnival last week which attracted teams from across Victoria, South Australia and NSW competing for $11,500 in prize money including the Rio Vista Fours and GBC ( Baden) Williams Classic Pairs.

The players included  Ben and Graham Winther, Scott Mejean, Colin Hall and Michael Gardner who acquitted themselves extremely well.

The team of Ben Winther, Scott Mejean, Colin Hall and Micheal Gardner won the $2,500 Rio Vista Fours defeating a very strong SA side in a thrilling play-off.

Ben Winther and Scott Mejean then combined to win the marquee event of the carnival , the GBC (Baden) Williams Classic Pairs of $3,500 plus trophy from a very strong field of 56 teams.

In addition to the above Ben combined with his father Graham to take out fourth prize in the 3 bowl sets play pairs.

The story of the GBC Williams pairs is an interesting one — briefly Baden Williams was a city engineer in Mildura and some nine years ago his son and MCC bowler, Dr. Peter Williams, set up a Perpetual Trust in his father’s name to be competed for by pairs at the annual May Carnival. Peter Williams returns to Mildura each year to compete in the event.
