Bowls Victoria Regions Competition

2024 saw 8 players from MCC join the Yarra men’s and women’s region sides.

The men competed against Geelong, Ballarat and Gippsland bowls regions in their Saturday games. Rinks consisted mostly

MCC rink with Brendan Gallagher (skip), Max Goldsmith (third) and Simon Naughton (lead).
MCC also made up half of the top rink of the competition consisting of Michael Wilson (third), and Scott Mejean (leading). This rink holding a clean sheet all weekend and finishing +39 shots.
The side finished Saturday strongly with 2 wins over Ballarat and Gippsland to edge out the Geelong region on shots up difference.
That setup a Sunday silver tier final of Yarra playing the Sandbelt region with a very high standard and tightly fought out match which went down the last bowl and Yarra winning the 45 end final by 6 shots.
The Yarra women’s 2024 side fielded talent from many clubs and featured Alison Hall, Sam Robinson and Denise Huender from MCC. The women’s team didn’t lose a game but finished Saturday with a single win and 2 ties which left them just short of spot in the Gold tier final.
Consensus across the region was that it was a successful campaign with both men’s, and women’s now competing in the gold tier and looking to go all the way in 2025.

The ladies final was made up of a composite team skipped by Tris Doolan MCC, including Trish Cullinane MCC , Jody Neville, Bundoora and Sammy Atkinson Richmond. Again a very close game our players having only a one shot lead going into the final end. Tris played the shot of the day to take her team to a 2 shot win. Congratulations to all players.

Australian side championships

What amazing results from the Victorian Sides at the Nationals this year. MCC had five players participate for Victoria at the prestigious Australian Senior and Open Sides Championships.

The Senior side were under pressure from the start to repeat their winning form from the previous year. With very tight matches the women’s team including Alison Hall and Denise Huender were awarded the Gold Medal, whilst the men’s team including Michael Wilson had a very close finish to win the Silver. Both women’s and men’s Teams combined to bring back the overall Australian Championship trophy.

Congratulations to the Victorian women’s side winning the Gold medal in the Australian side championship of which our Tris Doolan participated in and Brendan Gallagher also being in the Men’s team. Fantastic effort by all.

MCC Bangkok Tour

A small contingent of MCC bowlers recently joined MCC cricketers and golfers, MCC President, Fred Oldfield and CEO Stuart Fox in a multi-sport tour to Bangkok. The tour was hosted by the Royal Bangkok Sports Club (RBSC). The sporting and club facilities located at RBSC’s two central Bangkok locations ranged through from a racecourse and golf course through tennis, polo, squash, swimming pools and a very spongy lawn bowling rink.

Our party enjoyed four days of competition and generous hospitality, participating in two matches against RBSC bowlers, an official bowls dinner hosted by the club and a race day at the racecourse.
